What's so great about Final Fantasy?

no, I'm not being a jerk.. I really would like to know. And to prove I'm not being a jerk: I started playing FF1 on NesterJ the night Kxploit came out. Ive tried playing FFX before and could never get into it. So I thought maybe if I started at the beginning, I would understand what everyone's been saying about the series. I love RPG's, but have just never understood turn-based play.

So I'm really trying to like it, guys, give me reasons I should! Also, tips, hints, which of the series not to play would be helpful...

Play FF3 on snes

Eather you like it or you dont its kinda a cult following

well, VII is the game that got me into rpgs (like 95% of my generation).
IX was my favorite, followed by VI (which is playable on the psp snes emulator).
If you dont like it at first, you probably just won't though.

FF1 honestly sucks (unless you play the re-release on gba were you are able to run and the gameplay is faster).

Yea i agree final fantasy one is not very good at all but once you play Final Fantasy 3 For snes you will prolly really get into it and FF7 is also one of the best In The FF3 series

so should i not play ff1 at all? should i just jump to VI or VII?

VII sucks.

If you want to play real final fantasy games, get 4 or 6

I always thought VI was the best, but VII certainly doesn't "suck".

My wife really got addicted to Final Fantasy II for the SNES (which is IV in Japan). If you like any old school RPGs, then I would actually say that is the one to start with. I liked FFIII, but not near as much as I liked FFII. It must have been the story line or something, but both my wife and I just seemed to be drawn into the storyline of that game.

As far as FFVII goes, it seems that unless you played it when it first came out, you're probably out of luck from enjoying it. It's hard to get into the game with the polygonal graphics that were pretty sweet for the PSX for it's time. Don't get me wrong, I peed my pants every time I played FFVII. But with the FF games coming out now, it just doesn't do much for me. To tell you the truth, I'd rather play FFI-V again than play VII-IX. FFX and X-2 were one timers for me as well.

Final Fantasy one is what got me hooked on RPGs period, but again, I would say that the true legend of RPGs is Final Fantasy II for SNES (again, IV in Japan). That game literally made me cry at parts it was that involving.

To get expand on what I just said about Final Fantasy II for SNES, and to back up my point to why it was probably the greatest RPG of all time, it had everything. Extreme, extreme, extreme plot twists being the main thing. The story NEVER got boring. The story was like a book you just don’t want to put down, where you kept playing to find out what happens next. The boss battles were epic. You literally had the story going on WHILE you were fighting, rather than just “Hack hack hack, boss is dead, now the story continues”.

Each character had something valuable to offer. There were lots of secret areas to uncover. I mean, I really just can’t say enough about this game. If you aren’t into the story after the first 30-60 minutes, then either something is seriously wrong with you, or something is seriously wrong with me. But Final Fantasy is definitely the is all, end all, to classic, old school RPGs.

i've played most of the final fantasys' and to me VII takes the cake it really introduced RPG's to playing in 3-D. and ueumatsu did wonders with the sound. so if you want a good game try ff3 (ff6 technically) or Chrono trigger if you can't find them try coolroms.com, or rom-world.com you won't be disappointed .


Ps Japanese games like dbz: super butoden and hyper dymension are very slow.

Its hard to get into RPGs like Final Fantasy if you've never played one before.
The best way to get into the game is if you had no other game to play and Final fantasy was the only thing you had. Then once you start playing and get sucked in by the story, you wont put it down.
And once you complete it, you'll want to play the rest of the series.

Trust me. Final Fantasy is something that you have to put effort into to like but its so worth it.

Honestly, FFX sucks on the gameplay, but it's attractive to see. It is one of those, "good graphics doesn't make the game" type of situation.

I rather play FF3 or FF5 than FFX .....but FFXI and FFXII ...oh boy!!! it is good.

but anyway if you want a game that will probably get you hooked at instant FF is the way to go. Square - Enix (aka squaresoft) have the greatest RPG's FFXII is going to be on my list if you also want something for the PS2 it looks gorgeous hopefully it plays that way too.



p.s. any hackers out there who are working on a PSX emu that'd Be wicked

ff7 is the end all be all of rpg's nothing else comes close except maybe kindom hearts. Start your entrance into the rpg/turn based world with that .............by the way steer clear of FFIX it sucks so much

I couldnt ever finish FF7 because I lost my save after like 20 hours of game play.

maybe i didnt get a chance to like it because i rushed through it in a race with 2 friends to beat the game first. I would play it over but my 3rd disc is broken making the other discs useless

final fantsay 7 is the best one along with part 8, they both had good storys and for some reason i like having guardian forces like in 8. i hated X because tidus is gay and X-2 is a chick game, 3 is really good along with tactics advance, u just hafta like final fantasy you either do or you dont

IMO ff9 wasnt all that great, strange characters and mini-games story line wasnt that nice either i didnt get any of the things they said, but the other ff games i went through them like a breeze ecept ff7 (i had over 99:99 on the time ) so my choices would be ff6(3), ff7, and ff8

Final Fantasy VII was a giant leap in gaming. It was the main reason that I bought a Playstation. The different Chocobos were great.

Also, Final Fantasy Tactics and Chrono Cross are responsible for my poor grades in college.

i agree word for word.I was to hard on FFIX it was x-2 that sucked im still not crazy about FFIX but FFX-2 was the worst hands down the intro alone is enough to hate it we are all gayer for having watched it

Final Fantasy VII was the first Final Fantasy game I played, and also the ONLY one that interested me enough (besides III, VI in Japan) to play and finish without taking more than a year break.

If you don't like turn-based, then don't play it. Although I love the stories, the gameplay is HORRIBLE if you're looking for something more fun and action-oriented.

If it was more involved real-time battles I would be able to go through a Final Fantasy game just fine. But that turn-based stuff just gets to me, not to mention the random battles.

yeah but tun based is the whole purpose for RPG's, i felt so gay when i played X-2 and they were all like YRP lke charlies angels, and then the music was terrible i9t made me feel horrible and yet i still playe dit :confused:

I was more into the Zelda-like RPGs where it's alot more exploring, not the turn-based gameplay.

man, FF is like, the biggest bore-fest... I don't know exactly what FF it was (it was on Playstation that's all I remeber), but my homie had brougt it over... Since everybody always talked about how great it was, I played it for about as long as I could (about 3-4 hours), and I just stopped cuz the game was a box of yawns... I still don't see where the greatness is behind this franchise...

to each his own, not everyone is gonna like it, its not that evey has to lik FF its just most people like it including me but i can understan why some ppl dont liek it

the greatness is in the story and gameplay and seeing a character get stabbed in the back with a 7 foot sword is always fun its really a matter of taste im not saying you have bad taste to be honest if FFX-2 was the first i ever played i'd hate ff too .i

The greatness of Final Fantasy comes from the well thought out story lines and the feeling of actually getting to know the character you are playing with...FF isnt for people looking for non stop action packed gameplay such as GTA (which in my opinion blows nuts...each one is the same....turn it on...go on top a building and shoot away).

But if your a person who likes fictional story telling with character you can interact with...FF is for you...if you don't enjoy reading or actually using your head...then it's not for you...

yeah dud definatly well said, i never buy gta cause it gets mad boring after like 2 days, i mean how many times can yiou kill cops and civilians,
but FF actually make you use your mind unlike other games,

i was one of the people that started witht the nes version. i played it all the way through and liked it.

was even more into it when it came to the snes and gameboy.

when it went to the playstation i had issues.

i loved alot of the graphics, but that isn't what makes a game. the problem is that i felt the newr ones that came out for the ps2 started to lack story and playability.
i liked 7 until it got to the stretch of raising chocobos and breeding them. if it couls have skipped that i would have been fine.
then the mini games in the others.
the worst was that i didn't feel like i was really controling the characters. it was almost all straight forward and not alot of wandering around at times finding what you need.
i din't feel like i had total control.

FF VII did have a story..only it was totally different from the stories that made FF what it is,,FF VII took a more futuristic direction of storytelling while FF I-V where more of an actually fantasy set back in times long before..and for the people who complain on the way FF VII went with storytelling they need to look back at one of the greatest FF games in my opinion...and that is FF VI, this game..just like FF VII had a more futuristic storyline...although it still kept the FF basics intact...great story, great characters, crystals (in this case it was Esper's), etc...

FF VIII totally broke away from everything people knew that was Final Fantasy by doing away with all that people came to know and love about th series..no more characters with deformed heads (LOL...i loved that)..and they made it more realistic...I feel however that this did not harm the game itself though...even without the Original FF elements, it was still infact a very good game.

FF IX...an attempt by Squaresoft to return Final Fantasy to its roots...failed in my opinion...i dont even want to get into this one....good game...but not good enough to play through a second time...

FF X...all i can say about that game is "WOW"....number 1...great story...has all that FF is supposed to have...Evil...Love...Conf usion....Suspense...as well as allowing you to really get to know the character you were playing with...anyone that knocks this game down should suffer a brutal death...

FF X-2...let's put it this way....let me ask you FF Fans a good question..
Did you buy this game to play it and have fun, or to see if Tidus was really still alive? :D

This is my view on where FF has gone in the last 2 Decades...not bad for a company that was about to go bankrupt if you ask me :)

that sounds vaguely like an insault to my intelligence, but i'ma just keep walkin'...

but I knew sombody would talk about how it's a "thinkin' (wo)man's game", and it's not for those who are into games for the action... well, that's just not the case (atleast not for me)... i've played the Romance of the three kindom's games, Pokemon, Mario RPG, and a bunch of other "Boring Games", and had a pretty good time playing them... maybe it's just hard to play the game because of how much people hype it up... just like Halo 2... that game wasn't that fun to me, but that might just becuase every body keeps calling it the best game ever... I don't know... FF just really kills my buzz...

RPG's aren't for everyone...and i'm not trying to insult your intelligence, lol.

Final Fantasy isn't really known as the "Best Game" out there...since it's not just 1 game...although overall Final Fantasy is the "Best Game Series" out there :D

That's how people should look at it...not as the best game, but as the best game series

I don't usually play Final Fantasy games for their gameplay...cause i too must admit at times it gets quite boring...but the stories in those games are so amazing that they can keep you glued to your gaming system for hours at a time....of course knowing you take the time to read everything and not skip through it all

Skip through the story and the game loses so much

everything done in 7 was done in 6 with better story, and much better characters.

Actually if you read your character's correctly you would realize Kefka and Sephiroth are not close to being the same....lol

Kefka was always truly evil
Sephiroth was confused, he believed he was created as the other clones were...when in actuality he was born as a normal child to Lucrecia, he was injected with Jenova cells while he was a fetus...thus making his mind unstable..causing him to go crazy

FF VII was a good game...saying it sucks is horrible..it set the standard for all new and upcoming RPG's....

Ok so maybe saying ffvii sucked is a bit harsh, btu after playing it, i was highly disappointed. I was truly looking foward to the game, but in my opinion (which just about all of you disagree with) it was too similar to vi, and was not very original.

FF VII while it doesn't suck as some probably have said it is most certainly not gods gift to RPGs. The game is average at best, FF VI however is very good (though only my 2nd favorite of the FF series). FF IV on the other hand is very good and is my favorite game period.

Make sure you play a fanslation on emulator or the PSX port that comes with Final Fantasy Chronicles.

Yes they are very similar in terms of plot...but in the way the story is told they are entirely different.

The angel thing..yes you have a point..i wasn't too happy with the repeat there.

Uses Ancient Power to wreak havok...this goes with just about any Final Fantasy, lol....(Ex: FF X - Sin was Ancient, and was uses to "wreak havok")

Takes Ancient power for their own needs...once again..used in many of the Final Fantasy Games. (Ex: Crystals from most of the old school FF games)

It was close to FF VI...yet also very far from it...just with any game..you gotta take what they give you.

I personally would rather play SaGa Frontier again....you just can't beat the characters there, lol...even though the game got bad reviews it will always have a special place in my game collection :D
